I Am Pissed
I quote from the terms of a site:

"Again we must emphasize that it is impossible for us or any other Usenet service to police hundreds of thousands of articles that pass through our server¹s everyday. Any article that passes through our servers is the SOLE RESPONSIBILITY of the person who posted the article or created the newsgroup.

news2me does not produce any content that passes through our servers."

Through this supposed service, copies of my books are available.

This is the site: http://www.news2me.com/member_area/fileview.html?grp=alt.binaries.e-book&display_count=1

Check, people.

WTF? Where would someone even get the text to upload? I'd be rather pissed, too. Bet your publisher is none too pleased.

Publisher has been informed, but there are only two ways that could happen...either someone has cracked a secure e-format, or they've gone to the trouble of scanning and converting the entire books. I suppose in a way it's kind of a bit of kudos to think that somebody thinks it's worth it to go to all that trouble for my little books. Still, somewhat unsettling.

Och, I don't know. I just don't see book piracy as necessarily a bad thing in terms of actual paper sales. Pirated books on IRC or usenet isn't really something you can stop, either. Nature of the Internet and all that. I'd shrug and go with it - at least you're in good company...

Oh, News2me are basically right, btw. The material's on newsgroups, which are distributed - not mucb they could do even if they wanted to. You could do a Harlan vs AOL or whatever it was, but...

Yeah, and I had that debate in my head. Still, it rankles. Do these people just not have a clue?

People want the easiest, cheapest way to get what they want. They also don't understand the basic economics of "creator gets paid for creation." Blame free television, maybe. Or fanfiction.

As I said, let Penguin deal with this - they have the time and resources, and a LOT of their books seem to be showing up there.

The truth is, Penguin can no more deal with this than the film companies can successfully deal with p2p networks. it's the way the internet is built.

as I understand, Microsoft are trying to restrict piracy and incorporate DRM into their new OS. Whether that is good or bad is up to you to decide. I doubt it would be successful in any case.

Also, you guys seem to have the impression this is only on news2me. It's not. It's distributed on usenet, which means it's on thousands of servers - just as it is on IRC. news2me seems to be a web-based usenet service - that's all.

Enjoy it. Go with the flow. Even I have pirated e-copies of stories around - even saw one in Spanish once(!), and these days you can get an e-copy of just about everything - but particularly SF/F titles. I don't think you're really losing money this way - either people wouldn't have bought a copy in the first place, or they will get an e-copy, like it and buy the book. It's a bit like releasing something under CCL and, in any case - there's nothing you can do.

Now I'm off to download Jack Stein 2,3 and 4... haha.

By US law, (simplifying immensely) a defense of copyright must be attempted in order to retain it. Also, I'm not a big fan of "can't be fought, must be accepted." I got at least one copy of my books off the system by a combinationo of legal force and personal persuasion (the pirate was a moron, not a jerk)

you guys seem to have the impression this is only on news2me.

How did I give you that impression? News2me is news to me, but e-piracy is old news from my editorial days.
